Mark Waldo Design is the design studio of Mark Waldo and includes both architecture and furniture design.
Mark Waldo designs furniture that has emotional impact, a clean contemporary look and fits functionally into people's lives.
Mark Waldo, a native of California, is now practicing as a designer in Philadelphia. Born just outside of LA Mark Waldo is the son of an abstract painter and aircraft designer. Design fiends, his family surrounded themselves with an earthy California modernism. Inspired by the ranch houses designed in the modern language of Cliff May, his parents had their own ranch house built for them. It was here that Mark first experienced the casual flow of spaces - from indoor living spaces to outdoor patios and verandas - that signify Californian modernism. Frequent visits to his grandparents' craftsman house in Pasadena and trips with mom to the brittle and bright modernist LA County Art Museum also rounded out his earliest impressions of design.
Mark began his professional architecture and furniture design career in San Francisco where there was a strong community of designers. In 2006 Mark moved to Philadelphia where he works as a designer for the architecture firm WRT Planning and Design. Philadelphia, the home of muscular designers like Louis Kahn and schools such as University of Pennsylvania, has served to inspire a new wave of architecture and furniture design for Mark. Philadelphia's changing seasons and landscape also provide Mark with fold upon fold of new experiences that are now being expressed in his work.
