Michael E. Goldman is an architecturally trained designer and fine
artist born in Rochester, New York in 1963.
Goldman's work combines the precision of an architect and the
nonlinear process of a fine artist. Fascinated by the unexpected
beauty of industrial materials and objects, he can be inspired by
something that catches his eye at a hardware store, a flea market,
a salvage yard or in an industrial supply catalog. He often employs
found or pre-manufactured objects and prefers to use inexpensive
materials that are not considered precious: steel, plywood, concrete.
This offers a freedom and spontaneity to the design/fabrication
process and allows him to follow his curiosity.
Goldman's work is an incorporation of his experience as an architectural
designer for firms in New York City and Seattle, WA, and as an artist's
assistant, notably for public artist Buster Simpson of Seattle,
WA. He holds a B.S. from Skidmore College and further undergraduate
studies at the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New
York City and a M.A. in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.
He also spent time as an Emerging Artist in Residence at Seattle's
Pilchuck Glass School. He currently resides in San Francisco, CA,
working in the motion picture industry as an Art Director while
maintaining a studio in Oakland, CA.
